Telephone wire basketwork is the urban version of the traditional Zulu basketry. This craft industry has its origin in the South African mines where Zulu workers started to plait telephone wire scraps. The delicacy of these colourful objects turn them into luxury items.

We develop this range of animals made of papier-mâché with a small cooperative in Northern Cape.

Nobody knows it for sure but this craft industry seems to have its roots in the northern part of the Kwazulu-Natal. There, some kids once started to create their own toys with the things they had around. The ingenuity of the kids and the refinement of their objects made some craftsmen starting to create objects of same spirit.
Our animals are created and produced by a family from the Kwazulu-Natal. We use glass beads from the Czech Republic.

Wola Nani (from the Xhosa word for « let’s embrace and develop each other ») is a South African NGO that helps communities strongly affected by HIV. A part of this project is to provide HIV positive women with a home job, which brings them income and which allows them to keep a social bond while looking after their children at home. The making of these nice papier-mâché objects is the work of around twenty women. The patterns are made from cut out labels: Red Saldanha tuna, Lucky Star sardines, Lion matches, Boxer tobacco...
