Jose Fumo, known as Mabanda, is a well-known Mozambican carver who shapes
his organic sculptures in sandal wood (spirostachys africana).
When carving, he is guided by the shape of the wood, piece and
leaves. Each sculpture consits of a part of undealt wood.
>>> Nampula area, North of Mozambique.
The craftsmen of this area are specialized in turning hardwood. The
boxes, bowls and vases are turned in Mozambican ebony (dalbergia
melanoxylon), the wood normally used for making clarinets and oboes.
Our artisans use only fallen wood and manual lathes.
The boxes and bowls they make are very refined and their graphic shapes are timeless.

These elegant and poetic birds are carved in whitewood. Boavantura, the craftsman who creats them, is guided by the shape of the wood piece.
Traditionally painted with bright colours, we decided to leave them plain, in a contemporary spirit.
