Description

Shield, Kikuyu, Kenya
Wood
First half of the 20th century

The user of this type of shield would pass the fist through the lower opening and wear it along the forearm.

In struggle against the British colonizers who deprived them of land and forbade them from growing coffee, the Kikuyu people created the Mau Mau group in 1952 to carry out rebellion actions. This movement was a key step towards the independence of Kenya (1963) and gave the Kikuyu an important place in Kenyan political life.
