Description

Kente cloths are worn by Ewe dignitaries in Ghana and Ivory Coast during festivities or ceremonies.

They are made of narrow strips (up to 12 cm) woven on rudimentary but very efficient looms and sewn together. The colors and patterns (elaborated during weaving or later) all have a symbolic meaning.

The looms used are with heddles (up to 5 to allow the realization of complex decorations) and reed suspended and with pedals. The length of the warp weighted with stones allows to weave narrow and long bands.

Today made of cotton, the most prestigious loincloths were once woven in silk.

Our loincloths were woven in Kpetoe, in the Volta region of southeast Ghana.

Dimensions of this sample: 160×170 cm
